TMC Names Dan Randall as Driver Trainer of the Month for October 2020

Dan Randall has been with TMC for over eight years; training for over five. Prior to TMC, Dan was in the construction industry and he was ready for a fresh start. While browsing online at ways he could utilize his CDL license, TMC sparked his interest with their military friendly-approach. As an Active-Duty Marine and a member of the Army Reserves, Dan needed to know that he would be with a company that respected his military service and could guarantee him home for military drill weekends.

Dan got his start in training after speaking with his Fleet Manager about career advancement opportunities. “My Fleet Manager suggested I look at becoming a Trainer. I started the process and one of the things they asked was if I had taken a TQM class. I had no idea what a TQM class was, so I sat down for the class one day after I had been with TMC for two, three years. Now note: I was one of TMC’s worst rookies… but this class answered every single question I had starting out. Now, I strongly encourage every one of my Trainees to take the class. It was enjoyable for me and it would have helped me so much more starting out.”

Dan’s favorite thing about being a Driver Trainer is seeing his drivers become successful. “I stay in touch with most of them after they leave my truck,” Dan said. “Training is enjoyable.”

Dan’s advice to others who want to become a trainer is to have patience. “No two trainees are the same. Tailor your teaching to them.”

Dan says he attributes this to teaching time management and efficiency so new drivers will be able to make good money. Driver Trainers are vital to the TMC Training Department, and each month a Trainer is chosen who demonstrates the outstanding qualities TMC looks for in a Trainer. The Trainer of the Month recipient is chosen based on their safety record and the safety performance of their Trainees, the number of Drivers trained, and the retention percentage of those Drivers.
